Entourage - Peer to Peer Social Networking Application Under Development
"Entourage", a peer to peer social networking application is in preliminary alpha development with a first release expected in Q3, 2012.
The Entourage application will eventually share many of the characteristics found in current social networks with one key exception - each individual user will maintain his/her account on an internet hosting account rather than all users logging into the same central server. Some of the key benefits of Entourage:
- Each user will store only their information and their friend's information on their account's hosting service. All user info is distributed across the internet rather than in a central location.
- If you "unfriend" someone, your info is removed from their hosting service database.
- Redundancy - If a "friend" temporarily loses their hosting service, all other friends in your network continue to communicate normally
- Since users communicate from their own hosting account, they enjoy a less restricted flow of info across international boundaries and a reduced chance for eavesdropping.
- De-centralizing a social network means reduced data mining by a central server's owner.
- Messaging between user hosting accounts are not stored on a mail server.
Some of the features planned for the first alpha release:
- A "Friends" system with request, accept, reject, and de-friend functions.
- Basic profiles for all friends in your network.
- A friends-only news feed board.
- Private messaging for friend to friend communications.
- A customizable, public front page to let the public know who you are. This web page can also be left blank to increase privacy.
The Entourage application is expected to be free and released under a General Public License(GPL).
